St Johns Volunteers Non-Smoking Policy

The Healthy club is a pilot initiative between the HSE and Dept of Health and the GAA
The healthy club is committed to reducing the use of tobacco and its harmful health effects. Smoking is the leading preventable cause of disease and death.
There is no legal right to smoke written into Irish law .The majority of our members, officials, coaches, players, parents, visitors and volunteers of St Johns Volunteers are non smokers and they are entitled to a smoke free environment.
We believe that we are setting a positive example for the community with genuine concern for everyone’s health. The policy will help change social norms around tobacco use, and encourage people to consider quitting.
As a result smoking by all members, officials, coaches, players, parents, visitors and volunteers of St Johns Volunteers. and any other parties will be prohibited within all
➤ club and social and meeting rooms
➤ changing rooms
➤ toilets
➤ playing pitches
➤ near open windows
➤ near entrances and exits of buildings, facilities, and the ground
Of St Johns Volunteers club.
This non-smoking policy will not infringe upon the rights of smokers. This policy isn’t telling people not to smoke – only where not to smoke.
The St Johns Volunteers club recognises that exposure of non-smokers to environmental tobacco smoke (passive smoking) is hazardous to health and that non-smokers should be protected. The move to go smoke-free complements the St Johns Volunteers desire to create a healthy club. This policy has been written in conjunction with the St Johns Volunteers Alcohol and Drugs Policy.
The aim of this policy is to protect the health of all individuals involved with the club by keeping them safe from all cigarette related harm.
This policy applies to all members, officials, coaches, players, parents, visitors and volunteers of St Johns Volunteers.
The following roles are recommended to try and ensure effectiveness of this policy
Club Members:
Ø Will be aware of the details of and adhere to St. Johns Volunteers Club Non Smoking Policy.
Parents,Guardians and Volunteers:
Ø Support the club in the development and implementation of this policy.
Coaches:
Ø Will be aware of this policy and will adhere to and support the policy.
Visitors:
Ø Will be made aware of the policy through signage and awareness by club members and officials.
This policy is effective from ‘Date to be Confirmed’.
The St Johns Volunteers requires the following areas to be smoke-free:
➤ club and social and meeting rooms
➤ changing rooms
➤ toilets
➤ playing pitches
➤ near open windows
➤ near entrances and exits of buildings, facilities, and the ground
The St Johns Volunteers recognise that role modelling can have a significant impact upon the junior members of the club. Hence, the following individuals and groups are to refrain from smoking while they are acting in an official capacity for the club:
➤ coaches (when coaching, representing the club)
➤ officials (when officiating for the club)
➤ volunteers (when working for the club)
➤ players (when representing the club).
The following strategy will be followed if anyone breaches the St Johns Volunteers smoke free policy.
➤ Assume that the person is unaware of the non-smoking policy
➤ A committee member or club representative will approach the person breaching the policy and politely ask them to refrain from smoking and remind them about the non-smoking policy.
The St Johns Volunteers will refrain from selling tobacco products.
This policy will be reviewed six months after its introduction and then on an annual basis thereafter by an Executive Committee representative. This will ensure that the policy remains current and practical.
